Individual sessions and initial assessments will be telehealth or in-person depending on availability. Individual sessions last approx. 45 - 55 minutes (initial sessions may last longer as we are getting to know each other).
Initial phone consultations for new clients are free! I think it's important that we are on the same page before we start. I offer a ten-minute free introductory phone call to determine our fit. Therapy is an investment and I am here to make sure you feel comfortable, aware, and engaged from the very beginning. If we aren't a great fit, I am happy to provide referrals.
Poetry Therapy
Poetry Therapy is the use of poems, narratives, or lyrics to promote healing and growth. Writing poems can provide catharsis for troubling emotions, freely offering a non-judgmental medium for self-expression. Reading the poetry of others can foster feelings of empowerment and inclusiveness.
While I regularly incorporate poetry into individual sessions, I offer individual poetry therapy sessions for those with a special interest in using poetry for healing and growth.
Mindfulness Guidance
develop a daily mindfulness practice
Mindfulness is focusing your attention on the present moment, without judgment of your thoughts, feelings, or bodily sensations. Being mindful means being gentle and accepting of whatever is going on within and around you. People often confuse meditation and mindfulness, and think that being mindful means meditating for hours a day while your mind is free of any thoughts. The goal of mindfulness is not to get rid of all thoughts, but to learn how to pay attention without attachment and judgement. The goal is to increase your self-awareness and to learn how to feel calm and happy despite what's going on around or within.
Having a daily mindfulness practice has many proven benefits from reducing anxiety, depression and chronic pain to improving sleep and reducing stress. Practicing mindfulness can increase creativity, improve your quality of life, and help you feel deeply connected to yourself and/or something greater.
Together we will develop a mindfulness practice unique to your life. Busy professionals may have different needs or time constraints than retired individuals. Some people may feel drawn to meditation while others may want to practice mindfulness through movement. I will help you identify mindfulness practices that may be beneficial to your specific needs. We will start by looking at your average day, then figuring out how, when, and where mindfulness will be most helpful. Chances are you are already engaging in mindful activities!
The end result will be a Mindfulness Plan specific to your life. Everything takes practice to become a habit. And it is so much easier to develop a positive habit when you have guidance and support.
Mindfulness Guidance Sessions aren't the same as individual therapy. I will be teaching you certain practices that have the potential to improve the quality of your life. However, if you need to process your emotions, you may consider individual therapy first (or in conjunction with mindfulness guidance).
Walking Therapy ("Walk and Talk") Sessions
Walking therapy combines the freedom and healing powers of nature with emotional processing and expression. Walking sessions can be extremely powerful, and allow you to work out your body and your mind. Some people may find sitting in a therapy office or talking on Zoom uncomfortable. By moving the session outdoors, we can eliminate any awkwardness or uncomfortable feelings, and spend time healing outside!
**An initial telehealth appointment is required so we can get to know each other first. I am located in Raleigh, NC near the North Hills area. There are a number of parks nearby and together we will find one that works for our sessions.
**Walk and Talk sessions will be available depending on the weather and season. Summer and Winter months may have limited availability due to temperature. If we are unable to meet to walk and talk (due to temperature, etc), we will have a telehealth appointment instead.
